At Verduyn Tarps, we believe in progress — both in business and in the communities we serve. Our Gary, Indiana location recently received a small but meaningful change: the street we’re located on has been renamed to honor one of the city’s most influential leaders.
While our address has been updated, everything else remains exactly the same — same location, same team, same great service.

Who Was Richard Gordon Hatcher?
Richard Gordon Hatcher (1933–2019) was a trailblazer in American politics and a lifelong advocate for civil rights. In 1967, he made history when he was elected the first African American mayor of Gary, Indiana — and one of the first Black mayors of any major U.S. city.
Hatcher served five consecutive terms from 1968 to 1988, dedicating his career to revitalizing Gary and creating greater opportunities for its residents. A lawyer by training, he championed open housing, urban renewal, and community development.
Under his leadership, Gary gained national recognition for its efforts to strengthen local infrastructure, promote fairness in hiring, and invest in neighborhoods. Hatcher also served as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (1980–81) and became a respected voice in national civil rights movements.
His commitment to justice, equality, and empowerment left a lasting legacy — one that continues to inspire generations in Gary and beyond.
Why the Street Was Renamed
In October 2025, the City of Gary formally renamed Grant Street to Richard Gordon Hatcher Boulevard to honor the former mayor’s decades of leadership and his enduring impact on the city’s identity.
The renaming ceremony, attended by local officials and community members, was both a tribute and a reminder — that progress is built on the work of those who lead with vision and courage.
