Corner Protector Use

Why corner protection matters

Here are several key reasons why corner protectors are essential for your transport and hauling process:

  • Protects tarps and straps from abrasion at sharp edges
  • Spreads strap or chain pressure over a wider area for damage prevention
  • Reduces claims, repairs, and downtime while improving driver efficiency
  • Provides flexibility to secure mixed freight without compromising load integrity

Plastic Corner Protectors and Vee Boards

Details and use cases are important considerations.

Sizes: 4 in to 48 in widths, plus vee boards in 2 ft, 3 ft, and 4 ft.

Material: High-density polyethylene that flexes to the shape of the load, then returns to form when you are done.

Design details: Raised edges help keep the strap centered. Our 4 in plastic corner protector uses cutouts to reduce weight and improve handling.

Best uses: Palletized goods, boxed freight, plywood, drywall, bagged materials, and other surfaces where strap abrasion is the primary risk.

Corner caps: Plastic corner caps are ideal where the tarp touches a hard edge. They lower wear on the tarp and help extend its life.

Our Veeboard Plastic Corner Protectors are one of our most versatile protection products. They are available in 2’, 3’ and 4’ widths, with multiple spots for 2″, 3″, and 4″ width straps. They distribute pressure across a broader area, make strap routing easy, and are often all you need for long, delicate, or crushable freight.

Steel Corner Protectors

Steel protectors are the best choice when you secure your load with chains. Ours include vulcanized rubber for strength and durability and contain no rivets.

Options: With pads or without, depending on your cargo.

Coil cuff: Our Heavy Duty Steel with Rubber Coil Cuff is galvanized to resist rust, includes raised edges to prevent chain slip, and is more durable than plastic for coil applications.

FAQs

For a quick overview, please watch this video:

How many protectors do I need?

Consider every touchpoint where straps, chains, or tarps contact the load.

Corner protectors and coil cuffs: Count all edges that a strap will cross and how many coils you plan to secure. For general use, our Plastic Corner Protector Pack of 20 is what we recommend you start with. It also includes a convenient carrying case for organization.

Corner caps: Identify every contact corner your tarp makes with the load. Add a few spares that allow you to replace or add quickly as the need arises.

How do I choose the right protector?

Width and coverage: Match protector width to edge length as much as you can. Longer vee boards spread force, which helps prevent crushing or marks on delicate freight.

Material: Use plastic for strap abrasion and general cargo, and steel with integrated rubber for chain work and heavy or sharp edges.

Strap compatibility: Make sure that the slots or channels will accept your strap width, typically 2 in, 3 in, or 4 in.

Cargo type: To select by cargo type, if you have fragile edges, finished goods, or sheet material, lean toward choosing plastic and vee boards. For coils or dense heavy freight, go in favor of steel protectors and coil cuffs.

Storage and handling: Purchase in packs so that storage containers are included and to help keep organized so you reduce loss. And of course, lighter plastic makes frequent placement faster, but the load type is much more important to consider.

What are the practical use cases?

For flatbed building materials: Use vee boards to distribute load across drywall, lumber, pipe, and panel goods.

For manufactured goods and crates: Plastic corners prevent straps from gouging your load while also keeping straps centered.

For coils and dense metal: Steel protectors and coil cuffs control chain contact and reduce edge damage.

Tarp preservation: Corner caps at known rub points reduce holes and extend tarp life.

What sizes do your plastic protectors come in?

From 4 in to 48 in widths, plus vee boards in 2 ft, 3 ft, and 4 ft with slots for 2 in, 3 in, and 4 in straps.

Will plastic protectors crack in cold weather?

They are made from high-density polyethylene that adjusts appropriately to cargo shape. They are designed for real-world use in harsh winters and will return to form after unloading.

When should I choose steel over plastic?

Choose steel when you are securing with chains, handling sharp or very dense edges, or protecting coils where long-term durability is critical. Plastic is ideal for straps and general purpose edge protection.

How do I estimate the quantity I need?

Count every strap or chain crossing at an edge and every point on your load on which the tarp may rub. Start with a 20-pack of plastic corners to handle most loads and to stay organized for general runs, then add steel pieces for coil and heavy metal work.

Do your protectors help straps last longer?

Yes! By removing sharp contact points and distributing pressure more evenly, corner protectors reduce friction on straps, prevent fraying, extend strap life, and lower replacement costs.

In fact, what about the straps you offer?

We have top quality tie-down straps in a wide variety of types and sizes, from winch and ratchet straps, to custom straps that you can have designed to your specs, to various strap accessories.
