Heavy Duty Steel Tarps and Coil Tarps
Heavy duty steel tarps are built to protect dense, high-weight steel loads during flatbed transport. Designed with shorter drops, reinforced tie-down points, and abrasion-resistant materials, these steel tarps are ideal for hauling steel coils, sheets, rods, and plate steel across the United States. Steel Tarps Built for Heavy-Duty Steel Hauling
Steel tarps are designed differently than lumber tarps because steel loads are heavier and sit lower. For that reason, steel tarps are built with shorter drop lengths, typically 4 ft., 5 ft., or 6 ft., allowing proper coverage without excess material flapping in the wind. Shorter drops improve safety, reduce wear, and provide a more secure fit over steel freight.
All of our heavy duty steel tarps are made from 20 mil, 18 oz vinyl coated PVC material that is waterproof and resistant to rot, UV exposure, and oil. Reinforced hems with rope and webbing, #4 brass grommets spaced approximately every 24 inches, and box-stitched stainless steel D-rings provide dependable tie-down strength. Integrated wear flaps beneath each D-ring help reduce abrasion and extend tarp life. With a cold crack rating of -40°C/°F, these steel tarps are built for year-round hauling across the U.S.
Steel tarp options include single tarps as well as one-piece, two-piece, and three-piece steel tarp sets. Multi-piece sets can be combined to cover longer loads, while coil tarps and flared coil bags provide secure, form-fitting protection for round or cylindrical steel cargo.
Proper fit plays a key role in performance. A correctly sized steel tarp reduces wind resistance, minimizes movement during transit, and lowers the risk of tearing at stress points. Built to handle sharp edges, heavy weight, and repeated strap tension, these heavy duty steel tarps are designed to perform reliably in real-world trucking conditions.

Steel Tarps and Coil Tarps FAQs
What applications are steel tarps best suited for?
Steel tarps are best suited for hauling heavy steel loads such as coils, sheets, rods, and plate steel. Because steel is dense and cannot be stacked high, steel tarps are designed with shorter drops and reinforced tie-down points. While optimized for steel hauling, they can also be used for other heavy flatbed applications.
What are coil tarps used for?
Coil tarps and coil bags are designed specifically for round or cylindrical loads such as steel coils and cable spools. They fully wrap the load to provide protection from weather, road debris, and shifting during transport. Our coil tarps are made from the same heavy duty materials as our steel tarps.
What sizes of steel tarps do you carry?
We offer steel tarps ranging from single tarps sized 16 ft. x 16 ft. up to multi-piece steel tarp sets that can cover loads up to 56 ft. when combined. Drop lengths typically range from 4 ft. to 6 ft. to match common steel hauling requirements.
What materials are your steel tarps made from?
All steel tarps are made from heavy duty black vinyl coated PVC material that is 20 mil thick and weighs 18 oz. per square yard. This material is waterproof and resistant to rot, UV exposure, and oil. Each tarp includes reinforced hems, brass grommets, stainless steel D-rings, and a cold crack rating of -40°C.
What is the purpose of the wear flaps under the D-rings?
Wear flaps provide added protection at high-stress tie-down points. They reduce friction between straps and the tarp, helping prevent premature wear and extending the lifespan of the steel tarp.
What’s the difference between steel tarps and lumber tarps?
Steel tarps are smaller and have shorter drops than lumber tarps because steel loads are heavier and sit lower. Lumber tarps typically have 8 ft. to 10 ft. drops, while steel tarps usually range from 4 ft. to 6 ft. Both are made from the same heavy duty vinyl material.
Where can I see a video or images of what they really look like?
Each product includes images that show the construction and details of the steel tarps and coil tarps. You can also watch a short video on the page to get a clear look at the material quality, reinforcements, and overall build.
Can I order a custom steel tarp?
Yes. If you don’t see the size or configuration you need, custom steel tarps are available. You can request a quote by providing your load dimensions and application details on this page: https://www.verduyntarps.com/tarps/custom-tarps.
How do I choose the right steel tarp size for my load?
Choosing the right steel tarp depends on the length, width, and height of your load. Steel tarps should fully cover the load without excessive overhang. Shorter drops are typically preferred for steel hauling to reduce flapping and improve safety. If you’re unsure, contacting our team can help ensure proper sizing.
Are steel tarps suitable for year-round hauling in the U.S.?
Yes. Our heavy duty steel tarps are designed for year-round use across the United States. With waterproof vinyl material, reinforced construction, and a cold crack rating of -40°C, they perform reliably in hot summers, freezing winters, and changing weather conditions.
What should I do if a steel tarp is out of stock?
