Operation Safe Driver Week Is Underway – What Truckers Need to Know

It’s that time again—CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Week runs from July 13–19, 2025, across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Law enforcement agencies are on the lookout for unsafe driving behaviors, issuing warnings or citations to commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and passenger vehicle drivers alike (CVAS, 2025).

???? Why This Matters for Truckers

  1. Primary Focus: Reckless, Careless, or Dangerous Driving
  • Law enforcement is targeting behavior that shows “willful or wanton disregard for safety,” such as speeding, tailgating, aggressive lane changes, using handheld devices, impaired driving, and failure to wear seat belts (CVSA, 2025) (TransStar Insurance Brokers, Inc., 2025) .
  • Speeding alone is a major concern—long cited as a crash factor in about one-quarter of all traffic fatalities (CVSA, 2025).
  1. Enforcement = Impact on CSA Scores
  • Citations hit your CSA profile hard. A blitz can snowball into higher inspection rates, tougher insurance premiums, difficulty securing loads, and even FMCSA scrutiny (FreightWaves, Inc., 2025).
  1. Education & Outreach – More Than Just Tickets
  • Alongside enforcement, CVSA distributes free fact sheets, postcards (in English, French, and Spanish), driver education materials, and PSA videos for motor carriers and teen/new drivers (CVSA, 2025).

???? What Last Year’s Numbers Show

While 2024 focused on reckless behavior, data from 2024 and earlier shows significant enforcement outcomes:

  • 2024: 11,050 traffic stops resulted in 2,712 citations and 3,228 warnings (CVSA, 2025).
  • 2023 saw over 26,000 citations and warnings to CMV & passenger drivers (CVSA, 2025).

How to Prepare Your Fleet

  1. Revamp Driver Training
  • Revisit training modules on speeding, distracted and impaired driving, tailgating, seatbelt use, and safe lane changes.
  • Conduct refreshers and use scenario-based drills to reinforce what’s expected during a roadside stop.
  1. Use Technology as a Shield
  • Equip trucks with telematics, AI-enabled dashcams, lane-departure alerts, and real-time tracking.
  • Proactive behavior monitoring helps catch risky habits before enforcement does (CVSA, 2025) (TransStar Insurance Brokers, Inc., 2025) (FreightWaves, Inc., 2025).
  1. Pre-Week Compliance Check
  • Review hours-of-service, licenses, cargo securement, and all obligations to ensure your fleet is inspection-ready.
  • Make sure drivers know how to correctly engage with enforcement officers—professional, respectful, and full transparency.
  1. Mind the Aftermath
  • Post-week debriefs help identify compliance gaps and prevent repeat citations.
  • Use data to drive targeted coaching, awareness campaigns, or further training.

???? Real-World Takeaways from the Field

Reddit drivers comments often say proactive compliance is the best defense:

“Never hid from a roadcheck… Level one, no violations… Great guys explaining why I was pulled” (Reddit) (Trinity Logistics, 2025) (FreightWaves, 2025).

That type of mindset—being prepared and transparent—can turn a roadside check into a smooth process rather than a costly disruption.

???? Why This Week Isn’t Just Another Inspection

Safe Driver Week is high visibility. Enforcement isn’t just about this week—it impacts future inspections, carrier reputation, and business success (FreightWaves, 2025). Use it as a catalyst to refine safety policies, coach drivers one-on-one, and reinforce a zero-tolerance culture for risky behavior.

???? The Bottom Line

Operation Safe Driver Week is a strategic moment:

  • Law enforcement is focused, and citations can impact CSA performance and your bottom line.
  • Preparation—not panic—is your best policy: train drivers, use smart tech, doublecheck compliance, and coach post-week.
  • When fleets treat this week as a year-round safety initiative, they not only avoid penalties—they strengthen their reputation, operations, and safety performance.

Stay alert, stay compliant—let’s make July 13–19 a safe and successful week on the road.
